Child Welfare

 

PolicyWorks, Ltd. had conducted over a dozen projects focused on child welfare and family services including federally funded demonstration projects and statewide, multi-site programs and services. These projects have addressed child maltreatment, foster care, adoption, independent living, healthy marriage, and responsible fatherhood.

  

PolicyWorks, Ltd. is currently a collaborative partner in a nationwide initiative to develop the adoption competency of mental health clinicians and establish a national certification and as external evaluator for Virginia’s statewide post-adoption services network and Virginia’s statewide independent living initiative.

School and Campus Safety

 

We have conducted nearly 30 projects focusing on school and campus including development of Virginia’s first School Resource Officer handbook, Juvenile Law Handbook for School Administrators, and resource guides to crisis management in school and subsequent updates to these widely used resources.  We provided leadership for a federally-funded initiative that strengthened the capacity of Virginia schools to collect and use school crime and violence data; authored multiple annual reports on school discipline, crime and violence in Virginia; developed Virginia’s student conduct policy guidelines and a Parent Guide to Student Discipline Policies in Virginia; authored guides for Virginia and New Jersey on engaging at risk youth in meaningful community service;  authored materials on school-law enforcement partnerships and contributed to the National COPS in Schools Training curriculum for the U.S. Department of Justice.  Additionally, we developed Virginia’s training curricula for school resource officers, school security officers, and college campus police and security.

Criminal and Juvenile Justice

 

PolicyWorks, Ltd. has developed curricula designed for use statewide with law enforcement officers and other criminal justice professionals in the areas of eyewitness identification best practices, gang awareness, and gang investigator training.  We were partners in the development of the nation’s first state-specific law-related education program for youth and, more recently, developed content and lessons for the law-related education Virginia Rules, now used throughout the Commonwealth.  

 

Prevention

 

We have conducted more than 30 projects in the areas of substance abuse, violence, crime, delinquency, and truancy prevention, many producing multiple resources for policymakers, program administrators, and front-line professionals.  See Publications and Curricula for more detailed information on many of these resources.
